RIVER NENE The Nene winds through many miles of attractive countryside from Northampton via Wellingborough and Thrapston to Peterborough. It then enters the fenlands, becoming tidal at Dog-in-a-Doublet Lock and meeting the Wash beyond Wisbech. The river provides the only inland route between the fens the canal network, via the Grand Union Canal’s Northampton Arm. The many locks are mostly equipped with guillotine gates at the bottom end which can be hard work, but they are gradually being converted to power operation or replaced by conventional gates.88 miles 38 locksMaximum dimensions: length 78ft, beam 13ft
