MONTGOMERY CANAL

Although abandoned in 1944, the Montgomery Canal is gradually coming back to life as sections are restored and reopened. Already it is open from Frankton to beyond Maesbury, plus an isolated length from Ardd-lin via Welshpool to Refail. Following agreement between all interested groups including wildlife and heritage bodies (the canal is an exceptional nature conservation site and retains a remarkable amount of industrial archaeological interest) on how to proceed with the restoration, prospects are good that boats will one day be able to navigate the entire 35 miles of stunning Welsh border scenery to the terminus in Newtown.Navigable from Frankton to Gronwen Bridge: 7 miles 8 locks and from Ardd-lin to Refail: 12 miles, 11 locksMaximum dimensions: length 72ft, beam 7ft
