LLANGOLLEN CANAL
The Llangollen Canal is one of Britain’s most popular waterways, thanks mainly to the attractive scenery and spectacular feats of engineering on the approaches to Llangollen. Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, 1007ft long and 127ft high is an icon of the waterways. The Welsh end of the canal also includes Chirk Aqueduct, two tunnels, and the Feeder section of waterway which clings to the valley side from Trevor to beyond Llangollen. But the remainder of the waterway has its interest too: the ‘Shropshire Lake District’ around Ellesmere, the curious peat-bog country around Whixhall, the characteristic liftbridges and the Grindley Brook staircase locks.44 miles 21 locksMaximum dimensions: length 72ft, beam 7ft
