Leeds & Liverpool Canal

LEEDS & LIVERPOOL CANAL

The Leeds & Liverpool Canal was a massive undertaking – the longest single canal ever built in Britain. The time it took to build it was one of the longest too – almost 50 years to reach 127 miles from the port of Liverpool via the Pennines to the River Aire in Leeds. The canal features some of the finest scenery anywhere on the waterways, reminders of Lancashire and Yorkshire’s industrial heritage, and impressive waterway features including Bingley Five-rise Locks, a mile-long embankment across Burnley, and the 21 locks of the Wigan Flight.127 miles 91 locksMaximum dimensions: length 72ft (Liverpool to Wigan), 62ft (Wigan to Leeds), beam 14ft
