Calder & Hebble Navigation

CALDER & HEBBLE NAVIGATIONThe Calder & Hebble Navigation is a river-based waterway that extends upwards from the Aire & Calder Navigation to Dewsbury, Halifax and Sowerby Bridge. The Calder & Hebble did not see the repeated enlargement work that kept the Aire & Calder busy with freight traffic. Instead, it still largely as it was a century and a half ago, and many locks still feature a now almost unique method of operation – a wooden ‘handspike’ is used to operate the paddles instead of the more common windlass. As the waterway climbs into the Pennines, the scenery becomes less industrial, lengths of canal become more common than river sections, and the route terminates among restored warehouses at Sowerby Bridge.21 miles 27 locksMaximum dimensions: length 57ft 6in, beam 14ft 2in
