The House of Commons Speaker John Bercow is seen cutting the tape to declare open the first length of canal to be restored by the Buckingham Canal Society.

Although the section of canal at Bourton is only a quarter mile long and separated by some miles from the rest of the canal network, Mr Bercow said he was “thrilled” to be part of what he saw it as a great step forward towards the eventual opening of the entire canal – actually a branch of the Grand Union, which used to connect Buckingham to the Main Line at Cosgrove. “There’s still lots to do, but it’s a start” he said.

Also seen in the picture are two local canoeists who arrived at the event having paddled their home-made boat all the way up the Great Ouse from Kings Lynn in a fundraising effort for the Florence Nightingale Hospice.
