Police and Fire services had to be called to the River Avon after a narrowboat struck something unexpected in the water – a Land Rover

The hire boat Golden Eagle was heading up the river near Cleeve Prior in Worcestershire when it struck something and became stuck fast, despite nothing obvious on the surface and the boat being nowhere near the banks.

A look over the side showed they had hit a submerged Land Rover in the middle of the river. No one was hurt in the collision but the crew quickly contacted the police, fearing someone could be inside.

With the help of members of the West Mercia Police and Hereford and Worcester Fire Service, the narrowboat was freed from the roof of the 4×4. Using a special tractor, they dragged the car to the bank, where it was found to be empty.

A spokesperson for the emergency services said they would like help finding the owner of the vehicle and how it came to be in the river. It is thought that the Land Rover was pushed into the water, rather than driven.
