MONMOUTHSHIRE & BRECON CANAL
What is now known as the ‘Mon & Brec’ is the surviving part of the Monmouthshire and Brecon & Abergavenny canals which once provided routes from Newport to Brecon and Crumlin. Regarded by many as Britain’s most beautiful waterway, it follows the wooded hillsides along the Usk Valley all the way from Pontnewydd to Brecon. Locks are few, as the canal sticks to the contour and crosses streams by a series of small aqueducts. However that is set to change, with plans to restore the southern section which falls through thirty locks to Newport, and part of the Crumlin Arm which climbs through a further 20 locks to Cwmcarn.
