BASINGSTOKE CANAL

Basingstoke Canal

Although it begins in Surrey commuterland within easy reach of London, much of the Basingstoke Canal passes through fine Surrey and Hampshire heathland scenery. Twenty nine locks raise the canal from the River Wey to the summit level as it makes its 30-mile journey to Greywell Tunnel, the current terminus. Saved from dereliction and restored largely by volunteers, the canal was reopened in 1991 but still suffers from under-funding and water shortages; however back-pumping schemes are gradually improving the water supply while the future maintenance of the canal is under discussion.

31 miles 29 locks
