Union Canal

UNION CANAL

The Edinburgh & Glasgow Union Canal, to give this waterway its full title, connects Scotland’s capital city to the Forth & Clyde Canal via the unique Falkirk Wheel. This iconic structure, opened in 2001 and Britain’s first new boat lift for over 100 years, raises and lowers boats by 80ft in two counterbalanced caissons, and is one of Scotland’s top tourist attractions. Three new locks and a new tunnel complete the new connection to the original Union Canal, the rest of which runs on a lock-free level for over 30 miles to Edinburgh – a remarkable engineering achievement made possible by a series of impressive aqueducts.32 miles 3 locks plus one liftMaximum dimensions: length 70ft, beam 12ft 6in
