CALEDONIAN CANAL

Caledonian Canal

The Caledonian Canal links together Loch Linnhe, Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness as it passes through the Great Glen on its route across Scotland from the Atlantic to the North Sea. One of Thomas Telford’s finest achievements, the waterway alternates between lochs and canal sections built large enough to take sea-going vessels - including the mighty eight-lock Neptune’s Staircase flight. The canal links the towns of Fort William, Fort Augustus and Inverness, and provides fine views of Ben Nevis and the Highlands.
