ROCHDALE CANAL
The Rochdale Canal is an outstanding piece of waterways engineering, crossing the Pennines by means of 92 locks in its 32-mile length. Abandoned in 1952 (apart from one mile in Manchester), the canal was restored over a period of almost 30 years and reopened in 2002. Once clear of the northern suburbs of Manchester, the scenery of the central trans-Pennine section and the eastern length in the Calder valley is exceptionally fine.
