RIVER WEAVER
The River Weaver is a quiet rural backwater that was once a mainstay of the Cheshire salt and chemical industries. Although still industrial in places, much of the river passes through quiet countryside with few signs of habitation, and at Winsford it ends in the huge (but deceptively shallow) expanse of Winsford Bottom Flash, a lake resulting from salt-mining subsidence. At Anderton near Northwich, a connection to the Trent & Mersey Canal is provided by the Anderton Lift. This remarkable device, opened in 1875 and Britain’s only working vertical boat lift, was completely restored and reopened in 2002 after twenty years of disuse. It lowers boats by 50ft from the canal to the river, providing boaters with a unique experience.
