Ashton Canal
At only six miles long and running through the east side of Manchester for its entire length, the Ashton is unlikely to be many peoples’ favourite waterway. However it has a vital place as a link in the chain of waterways through Manchester that form part of the Cheshire Ring, and more recently it has become a key part of the South Pennine Ring. It also occupies an important position in recent waterways history thanks to the campaign to save it from dereliction that led to reopening in 1974 and paved the way for restoration of the Pennine canal routes.
