SHEFFIELD & S YORKSHIRE NAVIGATION

Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation

Formed from an amalgamation of a river navigation and two canals, The Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation connects Sheffield to the Trent and the Aire & Calder Navigation. Much of the waterway was rebuilt around 1980 to cater for heavy commercial freight traffic which never quite lived up to expectations, but loaded barges are still to be seen on some sections of the route. Parts of the waterway are still industrial, but elsewhere it passes through the attractive wooded Don Valley. The Stainforth & Keadby Canal section of the waterway forms part of a useful route from the Trent to the Pennine waterways for craft no longer than about 60ft.

43 miles 27 locks
Maximum dimensions: length 61ft 6in, beam 15ft 3in (some sections much larger)
