CHESTERFIELD CANAL
Almost abandoned in the 1960s when the last working boats carried their final cargoes, the Chesterfield Canal has seen a remarkable revival. Formerly derelict lengths have been restored and reopened, and it is now open all the way from Stockwith on the Trent via Retford, Worksop, and a spectacular series of thirty restored locks to the eastern portal of the old Norwood Tunnel. In the not-too-distant future it will once again carry boats to the town with the famous crooked spire. Boaters joining or leaving the Trent at Stockwith should note that the river is tidal there, and take appropriate precautions.
Currently navigable section: 32 miles 47 locks
Maximum dimensions: length 72ft, beam 8ft 6in (Stockwith to Retford) 7ft (Retford to Norwood)
