STRATFORD CANAL
The Stratford Canal is part of the popular Avon Ring cruising route. Its southern terminus is at Bancroft Basin, right next to the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, while the rest of the canal and passes through superb countryside for most of its length. It also has many waterway features of interest: the early iron aqueducts at Wooten Wawen and Bearley, the many split-bridges (with a gap for a boathorse’s towrope to pass through), the old guillotine gated stop-lock at Kings Norton and the complicated junction with the Grand Union at Kingswood. The southern section was the first major canal to be restored from dereliction and reopened in 1964.
