MIDDLE LEVEL NAVIGATIONS

The Middle Level system is a complex network of almost 100 miles of assorted drainage channels and old river courses that date from when the fenlands were drained for agriculture. They form a useful through connection from the River Nene in Peterborough to the Great Ouse at Salters Lode, but for many boaters they also have their own fascination. Remote and peaceful if unspectacular, they pass through interesting villages and towns including March, Ramsey, Upwell and Whittlesea.

Usual through route: 29 miles, 4 locks
Entire system: approx 100 miles, 7 locks
