The former BBC news reader, Adam Porter, has launched a new canal-based podcast, The Water Road, after starting a new life afloat.
Adam left the BBC in March after 24 years, during which time he was best known for reading the news on Radio 2, 6Music, and 5live. He also appeared on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, and the late Steve Wright always called him Captain on air, because of his canal boat. He and his husband, Adrian, have moved out of their house and onto their narrowboat. They intend to travel as much of the network as possible.
Adam said a podcast was the ideal way to share his love of the canals and rivers of England and Wales.
“There are dozens of canal YouTubers but I’ve always been a radio man, so audio was always going to be my thing. There are so many sounds that exemplify the waterways, from the clicking of winding lock paddles to boat engines and birdsong.”
Two episodes of The Water Road have been published in April, and there will be two more in May, as they’re being released fortnightly. Each episode will highlight features of the waterways, canalside attractions along with interviews with people involved.
The Water Road is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and many of the smaller podcast platforms.
