Cash payments for “large purchases” such as boat licences will no longer be accepted by the Canal & River Trust from 1 April this year, as it continues to move away from cash.

The Trust is encouraging more boaters to licence their craft online, but payments will still be accepted at offices by credit card (other than AMEX), debit card or cheque. Cash will still be accepted for smaller purchases, such as sanitary station keys, handcuff keys, pump out cards and electricity cards bought at the Trust’s customer-facing offices, although these can also be purchased at the online shop.

Business support and licensing manager Amanda Stratford commended the Trust’s online portal, “a one-stop-shop to manage your boat licence, from purchasing and renewing your licence to updating your details and letting us know of any changes in your circumstances”, where “Boaters are able to pay by a variety of different means and we would encourage every boater to sign up so they can quickly and efficiently manage their licence admin.”
