Volunteers are being recruited to teach schoolchildren near Stoke-on-Trent about the wonders of their local canals. The Canal & River Trust wants to recruit a team of experienced education volunteers based in Etruria as part of its Explorers programme for 7- to 11-year-olds.

The volunteers will lead sessions for primary schools, Cub Scouts and Brownies on everything from how canals were built to staying safe by the water, and from wildlife to the characters of the area’s canals. “The canals in Stoke have a long and colourful history so there’s loads of really interesting stories to tell. We’re looking for volunteers who can bring those stories and characters to life and inspire young people,” explains Sarah Cook, education coordinator at CRT.

The ‘Explorers’ education programme offers free themed workshops in school and out on the towpath, plus downloadable lesson plans and resources, with everything linked to the National Curriculum. The Trust is looking for experienced people who are confident leading organised school and group activities, and who are happy to work on week days during term time. They will have the support of an education officer. If you’re interested, call 07715 377788 or email sarah.cook@canalrivertrust.org.uk for more.
